Winterial Heated Gloves Overview
My search for a reliable, high quality and affordable pair of heated gloves continued as I tried out a pair of Winterial Heated Gloves.
While of course I did not expect these inexpensive gloves to compare with any of my top picks for the 2016-2017 season, Winterial’s reputation as a manufacturer of quality camping gear and winter accessories left me feeling optimistic enough to take a chance and give these a try.
Comfort & Warmth
The fleece lining inside these gloves provides a very soft and pleasant feeling, along with a bit of extra warmth. I emphasize “a bit”, as these are not nearly as insulated as other heated gloves in their price range.
Winterial has designed these gloves with three heat settings, the lower two being intermittent (to preserve battery life) and the highest being the only continuous setting.
I found that on the high setting, the electronic elements generated just enough heat to keep my hands moderately warm from the knuckles down in weather that was right around freezing.
No heat seemed to reach my fingertips which began to feel uncomfortable after an hour or so on the slopes.
The heating elements are located on the back of the hand rather than higher functioning products that generate warmth through the palm side.
The lack of adequate insulation compelled me to wear glove liners with these after discovering that the electronics can’t deliver the warmth I had hoped for.
My comfort rating for these gloves is a 15/20 because they have a great inner feel but a bulky exterior shell which limits dexterity.
As for warmth, I’m rating these at 10/20, as they really only provide enough warmth for relatively mild weather even on the high heat setting.
Water Resistance
The rubber lining on the palm side of these gloves is great for water resistance and grip.
The back sides are covered in a water resistant material that seems to be adequate for most conditions. I wouldn’t trust these gloves to keep my hands completely dry in truly sloppy weather, but for my purposes, they did keep the moisture out.
I feel these gloves deserve an 18/20 for water resistance as this is one of their strong points.
Quality
Certain aspects display intelligence within the overall design of these gloves. The Velcro wrist strap creates a tight fit and helps maintain heat while extra length on the wrists helps to keep out snow.
The gloves are offered in two color choices, the Grey pictured above and the Blue pictured below.
The stitching is solid and the gloves seem sturdy enough to take a beating. I would not recommend them as work gloves, however, even with the rubberized palm.
Like many modern glove manufacturers, Winterial has included material on the index and middle fingers of each glove that is supposed to allow you to use your touchscreen device without removing your gloves.
However, like most other gloves I’ve reviewed, this material seems to be useless in its intended function.
The heating elements utilize a light gage wire that may be partially responsible for the poor heat generating capabilities within these gloves.
The batteries are small and compact and fit nicely into the zippered pocket contained within the wrists, but do not seem adequate to do the job at hand.
I appreciate the battery charger design which allows both batteries to be recharged simultaneously.
I am rating the overall quality of these gloves as 13/20, taking price into account.
Battery
I would consider the small rechargeable batteries and convenient zippered wrist pouches to be highly convenient if they held enough charge to really do their job. Unfortunately, this was not the case in my experience.
Because I had to utilize the highest setting to generate a perceptible amount of warmth in my hands, the batteries lasted just under two hours before having to be recharged.
This seems to fit with the manufacturer’s claim that the batteries will hold their charge for two to eight hours depending on which heat setting is utilized.
Winterial includes a 120V wall charger and USB connector with each pair of gloves.
The recharge period took about three hours, a time period which also fits with claims stated by the manufacturer.
During my initial research of this product, I discovered many reviews reporting one or more missing items related to the batteries.
If you choose to order a pair of these gloves, please be sure to inspect your entire package for completeness before taking the gloves outdoors, as you’ll want to request a refund or exchange if you are missing the charger or USB cable, for example.
Although this is not a strong point for these gloves, I’m giving them a 13/20 for battery life since the high setting did produce (some) heat for nearly the amount of time stated in Winterial’s product description.
Fit
These gloves run very large! I ordered a medium (since I had read several reviews consistently stating that the sizing is off) and they were more than large enough for me (I typically wear a size large).
Another issue to note with sizing is the inconsistency between the inner and outer layers of the gloves. While both run large, the outer shell seems disproportionally large when compared to the inner lining. This creates a feeling of extra bulk and reduces dexterity.
If you’re unsure about what size you should be just have a look at our sizing guide as a reference.
Final Thoughts
I have to say that I am disappointed with these gloves as a whole. They do have some nice aspects, such as small, rechargeable batteries that provide some warmth on the highest setting, but they are definitely not suitable for temperatures far below freezing.
Quality control seems to be an issue, as many people report missing components.
In my case, I did receive everything as expected, but customers will have to pay for return shipping should a refund or exchange be desired.
I’ve also found that other heated gloves in this price range are more impressive than Winterial’s current product.
With that being said, these are still warmer than non heated gloves and they will improve comfort if you suffer from cold hands regularly.
