Ministry Of Supply has been working on this Mercury heated jacket for a while now and I finally got the chance to test and review it. Here we go!
Ministry Of Supply Intelligent Heated Jacket Review
This jacket is meant to be a good all round winter jacket that you can wear pretty much anywhere and will keep you warm in sub zero temperatures.
Initially I really liked the look of it. I like that it's a simple looking black jacket and not too technical looking like some of the other heated jackets on the market.
It appears to have some great features and some really neat technological advancements that I haven't seen with other heated jackets before.
In this review I'll be going through this jacket with a fine tooth comb so that you can learn everything there is to know about it.
There are a lot of factors that I assess when reviewing heated gear whether it be gloves, vests pants or jackets but with jackets there are even more things to consider.
With gloves, fit and style are factors but not nearly as much as with a jacket.
In my opinion you should really love the way a jacket looks and if you don't, then you shouldn't buy it.
But the look is only one of many factors. Below are all the factors that I look into when reviewing a heated jacket.
So I tested this jacket and then I gave it a score out of 10 for each of these categories. Then I add up all the scores to get the score out of 100. Here are the results of the review.
This jacket is made so that it can be worn anywhere which is why they made it in black. That way it can be worn with dress clothes or business attire and not look too out of place.
It's fairly plain looking and not technical at all but personally I like that about it.
I'm sure there are some people out there who prefer a more colorful jacket or a little more personality in terms of fashion but I'm happy that it's plain looking.
Here's a few more pictures.
So like I said, it's clean and simple looking. It does have a built in hood that is removable so if you like the look of a hood you can keep it on or take it off if you don't like it.
The Mercury is a tailored jacket so it fits snug and contours the body nicely. This made me happy as there's nothing worse than a bulky, baggy jacket. Unless that's your thing.
The collar is a couple inches high and you can't really fold it down as it's just not designed to be folded down so it will just pop up if you try.
Thankfully it's not too high so it looks fine the way it is.
It's got a decent amount of insulation so it does look slightly puffy but not too puffy.
All in all I think they did a great job with the style of this jacket. It's good all round which is exactly what Ministry of Supply intended it to be.
For this category I'm giving the Mercury a 9 out of 10.
If you've ever bought anything from Ministry of Supply before then you're already familiar with their quality.
Everything I've reviewed from them has been great quality and this Mercury heated jacket is no different.
All of the materials used for this jacket are well made and designed to last a long time through daily wear and tear.
The zippers are solid and all the stitching is very strong. In terms of quality it really doesn't get any better than this jacket.
I'm giving it a 10 out of 10.
Obviously warmth is an important category since that's the whole point of this jacket.
The jacket itself is quite well insulated so even when the heat isn't turned on it's a pretty warm jacket. That same insulation is also really helpful at keeping the heat in when the heat is turned on.
With the heat on this jacket is like a mini furnace. It's very warm and I love the placement of the heating elements.
There's a heating element on the upper portion of the back and two more on either side of the lower front where the pockets are.
This is smart placement because when you put your hands in the pockets it's toasty warm so if you forgot your gloves your hands will stay nice and warm.
I would say that this is one of the warmest jackets I've ever worn and the best part is that it doesn't have to be crazy bulky to get that warmth because of the electric heat.
I'm giving it a 10 out of 10 in this category.
For me this jacket was a great fit which always helps when talking about comfort.
The interior is a soft cozy material that feels really nice on the skin if you're wearing a short sleeve shirt.
The cut of the jacket is pretty short so it goes just slightly past the waistline which makes it feel free and not restrictive.
The collar sits about half way up my neck so my chin isn't rubbing awkwardly on it.
All in all I think it's a pretty comfortable jacket. The only down side is that there has to be a battery attached in order to make it heat up.
I'm giving it a 8 out of 10 in this category.
Wind and Water Resistance
This is a winter jacket designed to battle the elements so it would be pretty bad if it wasn't windproof and waterproof so fortunately it is.
It performed really well in our wind and water tests so I can happily say that this jacket is great for all elements.
It repels water extremely well to the point where I would be comfortable wearing this jacket in a downpour.
In this category I'm giving this jacket a 9 out of 10.
The features of the Mercury Intelligent heated jacket are super cool and really it's these features that separate this jacket from other heated jackets.
What ministry of design did with this jacket is they made it a "Smart" jacket which I've never seen until now.
What that means is that it will heat up on it's own. Basically it monitors the outside temperature as well as your body's temperature and if it drops down to a certain level the jacket automatically heats up.
This feature is amazing and probably my favorite part of this jacket. I was a little skeptical about it at first but in reality it works amazingly well.
There's also an app that you can get that will help you customize the jacket to your personal settings.
So if you're naturally a cold person and you want more heat then you can have it set to that so that it kicks in heat at a higher temperature.
Once you've got the settings all sorted out the jacket will know what to do and it will manage the temperature so you don't have to.
It can even be integrated with Alexa so that you can use your voice to tell it when to turn on before you leave the house.
These features are amazing and for that reason I'm giving the Mercury a 10 out of 10 in this category.
Value is a bit of a tricky one for me to rate because it's a little bit subjective given that each individual has a different sum of money that they would consider worth it.
This jacket is not cheap. In fact it's one of the most expensive heated jackets I've ever reviewed.
Costing around $425 US this jacket might be more than some people are willing to pay. If you think this jacket is too expensive you should see my list of the 10 Best Heated Jackets because they're all great jackets and much cheaper than this one.
But to be fair, this jacket has upped the anti from the other ones. With the intelligent feature this jacket is one of a kind.
No other company is making anything like this right now so the price tag might actually be justified.
For this category I'm giving this jacket a 7 out of 10.
Battery life is usually one of the first questions people ask when they find out about heated jackets.
In the early days of heated clothing battery life was a serious downfall but fortunately battery technology has come a long way since then and the battery life is very good.
This jacket will last up to six hours but it all kind of depends on how cold it is outside.
If it's a really cold day then the jacket will be working harder to stay warm so your heat time will drop.
Fortunately even on the coldest days it's still pretty good and you should expect it to last about 3 hours.
Generally it will be somewhere between the two depending on the weather.
In this category I'm giving this jacket an 8 out of 10.
Customer service at Ministry of Supply has always been top notch so we don't have to worry about getting the run around if something goes wrong.
There's a 1-800 number you can call to speak to a representative and there's also an email address you can use if it's not urgent. They're super helpful.
They do hassle free returns if you're in the US. You have 100 days after the purchase was made to return and unused items as long as they're in the same condition they were when you bought them.
If you're outside of the US it's a bit different you would have to pay for the shipping in that case.
I'm giving them a 9 out of 10 in this category.
This jacket is fairly versatile which is exactly what they were trying to accomplish when they made it.
Since it's a simple look and it's black that makes it pretty good for wearing to the office, to an evening outing and even to the ski hill.
The removable hood also adds to the versatility. The only time this jacket really wouldn't be good is on a hot day but that's not the intention anyway.
I'm giving this jacket a 9 out of 10 in this category.
Ministry Of Supply Mercury Intelligent Heated Jacket - Final Thoughts
I was really impressed by this jacket. Ministry of supply really knocked it out of the park with this one.
There really isn't another heated jacket on the market that combines these features with this kind of quality so that makes this jacket a real stand alone.
Overall they scored a 89/100 which is fantastic and they should be proud of that.
I really couldn't find anything negative to say about this jacket and believe me I tried to find something.
I hope they keep on making more models of this jacket in the future because it's amazing.
