Comfort + Warmth
When you try on the Gerbing Gyde S4 Hunting Gloves the first thing that you will notice is the feel of the Thinsulate insulation.
The Thinsulate layer both feels nice on the skin but it is also great at creating a layer of air which will in turn trap heat and help to keep your hands nice and warm.
In addition to the Thinsulate layer the gloves feature the brand’s iconic, signature Microwave heating system. This ensures that your hands will remain warm even in the coldest of conditions.
The combination of the two heating features makes the gloves perfect for all temperatures as it gives you some control and flexibility over the temperature of your hands.
The Thinsulate alone may be warm enough for most conditions but then of course there’s the heating function for those extremely cold days.
There are 3 heat settings that really am up the heat when needed.
The heat elements run all along the hand and along each finger which makes for an extremely warm glove. I was wearing them in 20°F and I found that the medium setting was plenty of heat but I did crank it up to high just to test the battery.
They do work as advertised and I have to say that they are very warm. Maybe some of the warmest gloves I’ve ever tried.
So they did really well in both comfort and warmth. I’m giving them a 17/20 for comfort and a 19/20 for warmth.
Water Resistance
Continuing from the positive start in comfort and warmth the Gyde S4 Gloves are also very waterproof.
The glove attains it’s water resistant properties through an Aquatex DWR layer which ensures that your hands will always remain warm and dry.
The layer is also highly breathable which means that you should never have moisture building up on your hands.
Although I didn’t find the gloves to have perfect breathability, unfortunately sometimes you do have to sacrifice some breathability in order to make a glove warm and waterproof.
But regardless the Gyde S4 Hunting Gloves do provide excellent water resistance so I’m giving them a 18/20 in this category.
Quality
Quality isn’t something that the Gyde S4 Hunting Gloves lack either. Firstly when you try on the gloves you can instantly tell that the gloves are a fantastic example of craftsmanship as they feel very durable and simply put, very well made.
What really sets the Gyde S4 Gloves apart from competition is it’s attention to other unique features.
For example the gloves are made of aniline cowhide leather which is what contributes to their durability. This sets them apart from other gloves that could be considered competition to the Gyde S4 gloves.
Another nice addition to the gloves is the palm of the gloves feature impact protected gel pads so that your palms are protected when say lifting things or gripping.
The gloves are also suitable to be used in hours of darkness as the gloves have reflective piping incorporated into the design.
The final additional feature is that the Gyde S4 Gloves have a touchscreen compatible index finger meaning that you won’t have to remove gloves in order to use your devices.
I’m giving them a 17/20 in this category.
Battery
The Gyde S4 Gloves feature a fairly standard battery. The battery takes a pretty average 1-2 hours to charge and you’re guaranteed at least around 4 hours battery life.
However the heating system will not always be essential as the glove’s Thinsulate insulation does provide a very respectable level of heat retention.
Therefore although the battery is fairly average it’s not as important as it is in some gloves. I’m giving them a 15/20 in this category.
Fit
The Gyde S4 Gloves fit perfectly. They feature an adjustable wrist closure which will ensure that the glove will remain fixed in position at the wrist.
This also helps to ensure that no cold air or winds can enter the gloves and best of all it ensures that the gloves won’t annoyingly shuffle ever so slightly on your hands.
One thing that I did notice when trying on the gloves is that they were very true to size which makes ordering online that little bit more practical so you can have faith that you’ll be buying the correct size for you.
If you’re unsure about what size to order you should have a look at our sizing guide.
Final Thoughts
Overall the Gerbing Gyde S4 Hunting Gloves are absolutely fantastic value for the money.
The standout points for the gloves are it’s warmth and comfort as well as the number of additional little features.
The Thinsulate insulation combined with the heating system means that there’s very few times if any that you’d find that the gloves aren’t warm enough.
The number of unique features is what really sets them apart from the competition.
Not many gloves will have all of a heating system, added padding, reflective sections as well as touch screen compatibility.
This multipurpose nature of the glove is what makes it a very good glove for me. Although they call this a hunting glove I think it would be great for pretty much any winter activity.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be just as sufficient as a ski/snowboard glove as well. The fact that they come in camouflage makes them great for hunting but you can also get them in black if you don’t want them for hunting.
They’re fantastic value for money with a nice little variety of features which are rarely found all on one glove.
